Mark Cuban Eyes Ownership of Chicago Cubs
Mark Cuban, known as the loudmouthed owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has articulated his interest in acquiring the Major League Baseball team Chicago Cubs from its owner Tribune Co., which is the second-largest newspaper publisher in the United States.
Tribune Co. also owns Tribune Media Services, Tribune Broadcasting, and Tribune Entertainment. Tribune Co.'s sale of the Chicago Cubs is part of their measures in meeting their debt obligations that has reached up to $13 billion. Tribune Co. is also selling Wrigley Field, their baseball stadium.
In this regard, Mark Cuban has become one of the prospective bidders who are anticipating for the offering memorandum of the Cubs.
Cuban stressed that he is the right person to take ownership of the team since his acquisition of the team is not just to put in some cash to his personal account, nor just to add value to the team or the Major League Baseball. He further stressed that buying the Cubs is about giving back to the community.
Cuban's interest in buying the baseball team, including Wrigley Field, brought about some favorable comments. There are opinions stating that Cuban could just be the right man for the team --- when Cuban bought the majority stake in the NBA team Dallas Mavericks in 2000, Cuban transformed the team from having a winning percentage of 40%, to 69%, with playoff record of 39-40. Also, when Cuban took over, the Mavericks took their first trip to the NBA Finals in 2006.
