Sergey Brin
Co-Founder of Google Inc.
Sergey Brin is an American entrepreneur and a co-founder of Google. Born on August 1973 in Moscow, Russia, Brin studied computer science and mathematics before developing Google with Larry Page. Brin is the current President of Technology at Google and has a net worth estimated at $14 billion.
Brin attended grade school and received further education at home. His father nurtured his interest in mathematics. In the fall of 1990, Sergey enrolled in the University of Maryland, College Park, to study Computer Science and Mathematics, where he received his Bachelors of Science in May 1993 with high honors. After graduating from Maryland, Sergey received a graduate fellowship from the National Science Foundation for graduate work in Computer Science at Stanford University. Sergey received his Masters degree in August 1995, as part of a Ph.D. program. Though still enrolled in the Stanford doctoral program, Sergey has suspended his Ph.D. studies indefinitely while he is working at Google. Brin has since received an honorary MBA from the Instituto de Empresa.
The defining moment for Brin was meeting his business partner, Larry Page, at Stanford. They did not get along well in the beginning, arguing about every topic they discussed. However, they soon found a common interest: retrieving relevant information from large data sets. Together, the pair authored a paper entitled, "The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine." This has since become the tenth most accessed scientific paper at Stanford University, and is considered their seminal work. As of 2006, Brin and Page are estimated to be worth over $12 billion each and are respectively ranked 26th and 27th in Forbes 400 richest people under 40. Brin is the world's youngest self-made billionaire.
In addition to his duties at Google, Sergey has various hobbies. Like many other Google executives, Sergey often gets around work by roller skating and plays roller hockey during breaks. He is an avid gymnast and has taken trapeze lessons. Maintaining strong ties with his cultural heritage, Sergey often dines in San Francisco's many Russian restaurants, notably Katia's Russian Tea Room.
Sergey is frequently invited to speak at conferences and forums for academic, business and technology leaders. He has appeared on numerous television shows and documentaries, including the Charlie Rose Show, CNBC and CNN. In 2004, he and Larry Page were named "Persons of the Week" by ABC World News Tonight.
